Writing and debug MDX

Requirement:

  •  Excel  2007 (not 2003)
  • OLAP PivotTable Extensions from CodePlex
  • MDX Studio from Microsoft SSAS Godfather Mosha Pasumansky
  • SSMS and BIDS

Steps:

  1. Use Excel 2007 to connect to cube and produce the pivot chart as the base dataset
  2. With OLAP PivotTable Extensions you are able to export the MDX generated by the Excel
  3. Copy MDX to MDX Studio, run the MDX and format it.
  4. Modify the MDX and test

The excellent function in MDX Studio is debug feature. You can use it to check the members, tuples and value returned by the function.  Some time, you write a MDX and you think it is working. But when you debug through you’ll find it may be wrong in certain cases. MDX is a big learning curve for BI development and MDX Studio is surely a shortcut.

I believe every BI developer should download Mosha’s MDX Studio as it is just second to none currently.

You can use sql management studio and profiler to drag & drop dimensions and measures, then at the profiler, click on file and export, as mdx. You can also use cellsetgrid as a server control on asp.net form and it will generate MDX statements as you select dimensions and measures.
